Behaviour 2027

XXXIX International Ethological Congress

23–27 August 2027 | Main Campus, University of Vienna, Austria

A warm welcome to Vienna!

From the greylag goose to the honeybee waggle dance, Austria has a long tradition of research into animal behaviour. We look forward to welcoming you to Vienna for Behaviour 2027 and hearing about your work.

We are excited to spend five days with the international animal behaviour community for talks, posters and discussion. We will catch up with friends, make new connections, and inspire and support each other in our research.

Share your curiosity about animal behaviour

Conferences are exciting places to exchange ideas, and we welcome colleagues from all backgrounds, career stages and areas of animal behaviour research. Students and early-career researchers are especially encouraged to join us.

We are committed to an inclusive, safe and fair conference where everyone feels welcome to contribute. We look forward to hearing different perspectives and talking with people we might not otherwise meet. We hope you will leave Vienna with new ideas, useful feedback on your work and friendships that continue long after the meeting. We are the animal behaviour community!

The program

We have a terrific line-up of plenary speakers. Their work explores mating behaviour in widow spiders, communication in hummingbirds and bats, and innovation, play and tool use in Goffin’s cockatoos. Other topics include sexual selection and reproductive anatomy in ducks, snakes and dolphins; learning, memory and personality in fishes; and song and culture in humpback whales.

Work on chimpanzee conservation brings together wildlife health, habitat restoration and community-led action, while tracking the movements of birds, bats, tortoises and butterflies offers insights into migration, navigation and responses to environmental change.

A broad range of symposia will offer the chance to explore particular topics in depth, hear cutting-edge research and discuss current thinking in animal behaviour. These sessions will give us time to get into the details of new findings and methods, debate different explanations and consider the questions that come next.

The draft program also includes parallel talks and poster sessions, with workshops and excursions planned for Wednesday morning. There will be social events during the week and a conference dinner on Thursday. Further program details will be added as arrangements are confirmed.

We hope to see you in Vienna!
